Artist Statement:
It is very important to me to always be moving ahead and breaking new ground, not only within my art but also in my perception and understanding of art as a whole. Whether it is the materials I use, formal issues, or conceptual issues, I find myself exploring different directions within my work from time to time. Although this happens I do not find it a distraction as much as I find it a necessary process by which I come to understand my own work and the world around me in greater clarity. My work deals with such themes as humanity, marketing, politics, social norms, sexuality, religion and science. In short what it is like to be an American in the 21st century.
I explore these issues using traditional oil painting techniques. I also use symbolism and reference historically significant works to further define my message to the viewer.
Do to the small size of most of my works the casual viewer will miss out on the true message that my works consist of. For the viewer who will take the time to look at the works, he or she will gain a fuller understanding of the content of the work and might even be rewarded with a little tongue-in-cheek humor that I hide within the compositions.
I do not believe in explaining each work and it's meaning to the viewer, but will leave it up to them to analyze and interpret as they see appropriate. I do this so the viewer can explore each piece with their own imagination and preconceived notions from their unique life experiences to form their own conclusions. I also find it more fulfilling to guide them gently into the direction I want their minds to go than to use shock techniques.
